Online Discussion: War on Ukraine – Agricultural Implications for the EU and International Markets

Am Donnerstag, 10. März 2022, um 19:00 Uhr

Putin’s war of aggression on Ukraine not only puts security and energy issues at the center of the political agenda, its implications go far beyond. Both Ukraine and Russia are key figures in the global agricultural market, in particular as exporters of wheat to the Middle East and North Africa. Thus, the current situation raises questions on agricultural and food policy consequences for the EU and the rest of the world,

What is the current situation in Ukraine? How is the war currently affecting Ukrainian agriculture and how could it do so in the future? How does the war affect the global agricultural markets and the global grain supply, especially for the most vulnerable import countries? What options does the European Union have for action and to what extent does it need to rethink its current agricultural policy?

I will be discussing these questions together with Dr. Bettina Rudloff, Prof. Dr. Oleg Nivievskyi and Prof. Dr. Sebastian Lakner

  • Dr. Bettina Rudloff, agricultural engineer and economist, is working as Senior Associate at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP).
  • Prof. Dr. Oleg Nivievskyi is an agricultural economist and Vice President of Economic Education at Kyiv School of Economics.
  • Prof. Dr. Sebastian Lakner is an agricultural economist and Head of the Chair of Agricultural Economics at the University of Rostock, Germany.
