Armenian Elections – Step towards Democracy

23. June 2021

Statement of shadow rapporteur on Armenia from the Greens/EFA Group at the European Parliament – MEP Viola von Cramon:

“Congratulations to Acting Prime Minister of Armenia and his party with a clear victory in the early parliamentary elections. Despite the military defeat, immense pressure, and polarisation during the pre-election period, Mr Pashinyan reconfirmed the legitimacy of his democratic vision. OSCE/ODIHR’s preliminary report assessed these elections to be competitive as the fundamental rights and freedoms of the voters were generally respected.

The newly elected parliament and the future government of Armenia need to continue the democratic consolidation by strengthening institutions and uniting society. We at the European Parliament stand with the people of Armenia in this quest and are ready to provide political and humanitarian support needed for overcoming many challenges currently faced by the country:

Urgent humanitarian work needs to be done to provide shelters to those displaced after the recent Nagorno Karabagh war; Prisoners of war need to be returned home and urgent psychological and other types of medical assistance need to be provided to the victims of the conflict.

In this process, the EU can and should take a more decisive role, support the democratic aspirations of Armenia and pave the way for the long-term peace that will be grounded on the regional cooperation and respect of all ethnic groups.”
