The German government and the Nord Stream 2

The German coalition government should respect the European law in the case of Nord Stream 2

According to press information there will LogoREbe a vote on amending the German implementation of the European Gas Directive. The CDU/CSU and SPD coalition is clearly breaching the community law with the new amendments, which in practice would mean that Putin’s long awaited project, the Nord Stream 2 pipeline would be taken out from EU regulations.

Viola von Cramon-Taubadel, MEP member of the Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET) and substitute member of the Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) comments:

„Merkel’s tactic follows a short-sighted nationalistic interest. No EU government is above the law. How can we demand from the countries in our neighbourhood to implement and follow the aquis if Germany does not do so? How can we credibly criticise those member states, which are dismantling democracy if the biggest member state is ready to step over the rules to serve Putin’s interest?“

The government in Berlin seems to have changed its mind now a number of times in the past few months. If the EU governments agreed to tackle Gazprom’s strong power and the energy dependency in the European market, we shall step up for less monopolistic practices, not stepping over the existing regulations.

It is now time for Merkel and the CDU/CSU to clarify what they stand for: will they follow the European rules ? Or will they serve a short-sighted business interest?“
